My story pt 6

I opened the door and peeped to have a glance at my desk... 

Lo and behold, I saw a piece of envelope on my desk waiting for me.. 

I stood at the doorpost for awhile, sighing and trying to figure out what the letter could contain but I wouldn't know until I opened it

I closed the door behind me, and picked my phone and my charger and plugged it one of the socket outlet to charge 

Moving slowly and closer to my desk, my gazed was fixed on the envelope, the closer I get, the faster my heartbeat..

At that moment, I felt the air conditioner in my office was blowing heat because I was sweating 

"Lord, have mercy"... I said silently

Now, I sat on my chair, hands folded, watching the envelope, I was thinking of giving it some time before I read it, but I couldn't hold the anxiety and fear 

I reached for the desk, and touched the envelope gently, as I tried to open it

Suddenly, the door to my office opened noisily, that I was shocked.. 

It was the cleaner, Peter! 

"Are you....are you crazy at all"... I yelled at him angrily

He was shocked to see me react that way, he stood at the door, mouth agape, holding the broom and parker in his hands

"Ahh sorry sir, am sorry, I didn't knock before I entered abi, no mind me, i was just too happy this morning that I forgot to knock"... He said 

"What's the happiness about".. I asked, frowning my face

He burst into laughter, that I began to feel embarrassed 

"So, you haven't recieved any letter this morning from secretary?"... He asked, showing his sets of teeth 

It was then that it dawned on me, what the letter could contain... 

I picked up the envelop immediately and opened it, I skipped the introduction and whatever it was and it read:

"You have been promoted to the post of the senior clerk and you're to occupy the post and start working by Monday"

This was the part that caught my attention the most, I was smiling at the letter,feeling relieved, I looked at Peter and glanced back at the letter.. 

I tried reading to the end, but what I saw this time was so disappointing, that it took the smile off my face

I looked at Peter again, he was surprised not to see me jubilating or jumping for joy

"Sir, what's happening, we are supposed to be popping champagne by now?... He asked me, still smiling and trying to move closer to me.        

"Champagne kill you there"!!... I replied angrily                                                            "Will you get back to your work"!...I commanded 

He was so disappointed, he went back to doing his work and after he was done, he left without saying a word... 

I sat on my chair, laying my head on the desk, and thinking deeply in sorrow

"How can I be promoted to a new post, without a dime for the past 3months, how can I manage my self,house rent, electricity bill and other personal needs??... All these went through my mind

I sat there thinking for a while, until the door opened again 

"Why are you in such a mood"?.. asked the secretary 

"I don't understand what's going on in this company,everything is just blindfolded, how can I be promoted to a new post without salary for the past 3 months??.. I asked

"Well, I don't know about that, but as for me, I was promoted and paid in full, the Boss knows what I want and I give what it takes at the same time"... She replied 

''Ohhhh, so it has to gotten to the extent of giving and taking between you and Boss, right?...I asked 

"What do you mean by that, are you accusing me of having affairs with the Boss".?.. She asked, with a bit of terror in her voice

"You just said you give what it takes to get what you want from Boss, so what am I not giving to get my salaries for the past 3 months"?...  I asked, standing up from my chair and confronting her

"Well, I don't know, I don't care"!!.. She fired back at me.                                          "Am no longer in for this arguement, and don't you ever talk to me again"!!... She added 

She walked out of my office, I watched with intense hatred from my heart

I paced about the office, thinking of what next to do, what move to make...I made up my mind to ask the Boss about it... 

I left my office and i went straight to the Boss's office, he was appearing belligerent but I remained a calm face 

"Sir, I have come to discuss something with you"... I said calmly

"What is it pls".. He asked, acting as if he doesn't know what's going on 

"Sir, I have seen the letter that was delivered on my desk, and I.... I will like to say somethings about it"... I asked

"Go ahead pls"... He said, looking at me sharply 

"The promotion is a good thing sir but the fact that I haven't collected 3 months salary is something I can't bear any longer, I have a lot of issues at hand to attend to but there's no money! 

"Look, everyone needs money, just that the company has a low profit intake from the contracts that we have been signing, and so we have to suspend salaries".. He explained 

"But sir, the secretary has been paid, she told me that she had her pay in full "

"No ooo, yes..but, you know.... I just decided to pay her cos em... emm she has been a good secretary and she is doing well... 

"Really"?... I asked

"No, not that you're not good ooo, I just, you know... just want to settle her and emm, some other things like that

He was talking aimlessly.. 

Now I understood what could be going be going on between the Boss and Secretary     But how should that affect me, I didn't understand, is there a conspiracy? 

"Ok sir, I have heard all you said... I said while leaving for the door

He didn't say a word

"I'll try and get back to you"... He said

I went back to my office, sat down and glanced at the wall clock, it was almost closing time, I was so worried that I couldn't even do any office work

At a distance, I saw my phone flash its screen light, maybe it was a notification or something else, I didn't know

I stood up and went to check it.. 

I saw missed calls from my neighbor, Mr Akpan.. I was wondering what he could be calling me for, I dialed his number... 

"Mr Apkan, what is it"?... I asked

"Oga, where you dey"?... He shouted

"You know i am at work now".. I replied 

"Oga, he don happen o, it don finally happen ooo, abeg dey come house now now.... He said, shouting like there was some sort of danger somewhere 

I became confused and disorganized, not being able to understand what's happening 

"Ok, I will come right away.. I replied, but he had cut the call

I hurried unplugged my phone, picked my suitcase and rushed out of the office....
