My story pt 8

Simultaneously, there was a sudden hard knock on the door

"Mr Akpan, is that you again, are you crazy again this morning?... I shouted angrily 

I heard a voice replied back.. 

"We are not crazy, we are from the Community Police Station!... 

I placed my hands on my head, my mouth agape.... 

I stood up from my knees, picked a cloth to wear and moved towards the door, I felt cold blood running through my veins, my hands were trembling 

I opened the door and I saw two hefty police officers standing in front of me

One who seemed to be the senior officer was wearing a black cap with a baton in his hand 

The other, was just an accompanying officer

"Good morning o"...I greeted them 

"Good morning mister, I am Officer Clement, we are from the Community Police Station, and you are accused of assault and violation of human rights"...

"Human rights, whose rights were violated"?... I asked, looking confused

"I would like you to follow us to the station, perhaps you will be able to make some explanations"... He replied

"No, I don't think so, but I have to go to work and by the way, I don't know why I should follow you to the station"...I said, with a bit of confidence

He signaled to the officer behind him, he came forward and used the handcuffs on me

"But what's the meaning of all this, how can you come and arrest me in my house, what's all this about"?...I shouted, as I was being led out through the passage 

While at the station.... 

I was told to wait for awhile, until further notice 

After a while, an officer approached me ;

"Hey, mister man, the DPO wants to see you now"...he said

 

I stood up reluctantly, and headed for the office

I was ushered in by the officer, who kept on pushing me to move further, though I was not comfortable with the gesture

There sat the DPO, he was looking belligerent that I had to keep off face contact 

"Sir, he is here "... said the officer, while saluting the DPO

"Yea, thank you, you can leave".. said the DPO

I looked round the office and my heart skipped a beat, when I saw Mama Landlady sitting at a corner in the office. 

"What could this mean, was she the one behind this situation"? ... I thought 

But I was jolted back to life by the sudden voice of the DPO

He cleared his throat and started:

"So you're the one who wants to kill Madam, abi?... He asked, looking at me sternly

"No ooo, I am not.... 

"Sharaaaaap"... He cut in, shouting at me

"So because she is a woman, you feel you can torture her and go unpunished, abi?...He asked

"Sir, I didn't touch her ooo, I was only... 

"Sharaaaaap"... He shouted again

"So you think you have the right to beat a woman, isn't it"?.. He asked, pointing at me 

"No, I did not beat her, I was just trying to...

"Sharaaaaap ".. He shouted again,with terror in his voice

He signaled to Mama Landlady, she brought out a white paper and handed it over to him

"Now, listen to me, due to yesterday night's assault, you have caused damage to Madam's body,infact, she is just coming back from the clinic "... He explained, sharply fixing his gaze at me

"Ahhh, how come,pls I didn't do any damage"... I pleaded

"I say sharaaaaap"... He shouted

This time, I decided to be silent for a while 

He took a brief glance at the paper and continued;

"So as a result of the injuries you've caused, you will have to pay for the drugs and other things that are listed in this paper ".. He said, flapping the paper 

He dropped the piece of paper in front of me so I could examine it

What I saw on it was shocking, that I had to break the silence in me

"How, 10 thousand naira for what"..?.. I asked, gazing at Mama Landlady

"That's what you will pay for the injuries you caused for me"... said Mama Landlady,  who now began to demonstrate her violent behaviour

"But before God and man, I did not touch you, I was only trying to free myself"..I explained 

"So while you were trying to free yourself, don't you know that you hit me, that I began to bleed"? ... she asked

"Ahh, Mama Landlady, it is not so , I just wanted to.... 

"Sharaaaaap, idiot! "... shouted the DPO, who was now, moving towards me

"If I hear you say anything there again, I will make sure you regret it"!... He added

"Am sorry sir"... I said silently

"So you have not even paid your electricity bills too, and because of that you want to strangulate madam and kill her,you want her to die prematurely, abi? ... He asked

"Talk to me"... He shouted

"I don't have any plans to kill her, all I wanted to....

"Sharaaaaap ".. He barked into my face. 

"Now, I give you the grace till next week Monday, make sure you pay your bills or else... 

He didn't complete the sentence but I knew he meant evil

"DPO, pls tell him that I need the money for the drugs immediately, I cannot bear this pain in me"... She lied

"Make sure you pay it today!...He said

"This is all a scam"... I said to myself 

He called one of the officers to remove the cuffs from my hand, and lead me out of his office 

I could hear Mama Landlady laughing, when I was being ushered out of the office

It was all a planned set-up! 

I left the station and went back to my apartment, but as I was approaching the gate, I saw Mr Akpan

"Ahhh, Oga, wetin happen, una no go work today, abi una don strike"?...He asked, looking at me pitifully 

"I am just coming from the Police Station, I had to go and clear some things".. I answered 

"Police station, una thief money"?... He asked

"Its Mama Landlady o, she lied to the police that I assaulted her, and cause injuries for her"... I replied

"Wetin be assaulted"?.. He asked, looking confused

"Assault as in ambush, to attack someone physically"... I explained 

"Ehen, those English wey una dey use too big for me, but una no do anything for her na".. He said, laughing hysterically that I began to feel embarrassed 

"There is nothing to laugh about and I have been told to pay medical bills of 10 thousand naira today".. I said

"Chineke"!... He exclaimed 

"10 thousand naira on top wetin"? . He asked

"See, let's just forget that part for now, I have to go and find money, there is a lot of debt on me".. I explained and left for my apartment 

I entered my room and sat down on the couch 

"What kind of thing is this, Oh God, I asked for daily bread not daily mess "... I said

I glanced at the wall clock, it was 12:32pm

My mind flashed back to the phone calls I missed, I searched for my phone and decided to call the Boss and explain to him

I dialed his number, he picked the call! 

"Hello sir"... I greeted

"Yes, hello"?... He answered, with an unfriendly intonation

"Sir, I am not at work yet because I actually had to solve some issues and I..."

"I swear, you will lose this job if you don't get to the office as soon as possible... He said, raising his voice 

"But sir, I have not even prepared my... 

He ended the call! 

I glanced at the wall clock, 12:40pm

I hurriedly went through my daily routines and after i was done, I left my apartment

I rushed out of the gate into the main street, totally ignoring the greetings that came from people

Luckily for me, I quickly got a bike to transport me to work, and after a long ride, I finally got to work 

I briefly greeted Sule as I passed through the gate

"Oga, una come late o,  wetin happen, anything for the boys"?.. He asked

But I didn't respond! 

As I entered the main building, I went straight into the Boss office

There, I saw him, sitting and staring at me 

"Good morning... good.. good afternoon sir"...I stammered

"Hmmm, I see what you are trying to become, well, I don't have any business with you, go and meet the Secretary, she's in charge... He laughed so loud that I felt disappointed 

My mind flashed back to what happened between me and the Secretary few days ago... 

I left the Boss office and went straight to the secretary's desk...
