My story pt 3

We heard a loud sound...

We were both perplexed that we almost staggered off the bike

Suddenly, I felt the bike wasn't moving as smooth as before, I tapped Mr Akpan on the shoulder, and he sensed a problem

He looked back at me and said;
"Oga, tyre don burst o"
I came down immediately, and assumed that the sound of the punctured tyre made the loud sound
"Oga, tyre don burst o", he repeated
"Ahhh, tyre, did something chuk it?.. I asked sorrowfully
"Oga, how you wan make I know if na nail chuk am, no be say we gather dey on top am?
I was displeased with that reply, I looked at him with distaste, but he wouldn't notice, it was very dark

Hissing with regret, I shouted;
But why, why all this, why is it this night?

Mr Akpan didn't even answer, instead he bent low to examine the punctured tyre as if he had an instant remedy for it

I tried glancing at my wristwatch, but now the darkness was much that I couldn't read what time it was

Mr Akpan stood up from his unnecessary examination of the punctured tryes, and dusted his palms, saying;
"Oga, e be like say, na leg we go use reach house o"

It was frustrating to hear that though i was expecting that painful word from him,I didn't say a word

 He started pushing the bike down the street, I walked behind him, shaking my head with full regret

The distance from our location to our home was 30 mins on foot, I was starting to feel hungry, thoughts of going to work early in the morning started to fill my mind

The moonlight shone bright upon us that our shadows were very visible, I still never said a word to my companion

Not until we were about 10 mins closer to the house, did I talk to Mr Akpan

"What did mama landlady say about the electricity bill"?.. I asked

"Me don pay my money, I no want wahala for my life, abeg", he answered quickly
"Wahala, what do you mean"? ... I asked

For response,he halted the bike and looked towards my direction sharply

"Oga look, that woman dey vex for you ooo, she dey tell me say if you no pay the money before e reach Saturday, she go cut ya wire comot".. He explained
"Ahh, when did she say so"?.. I asked confused and troubled within my mind

"When you comot house this morning, she come my side, dey knock my door like say no be money I use buy door, she con dey shout dey raise voice for me like say I kill her pikin, she talk say she no go take am easy for both of us at all".. He replied

"She talk say if you don come back from work, she go reason you wella".. He added

I listened carefully to all he said tho it was bitter to digest all the story

He hissed and continue pushing his bike ;
"See ehn, sake of say I no want wahala for myself, I go borrow money from Mama Chinaza say make I use am pay, so na only you remain ooo"

I was deeply thinking about all he has said.. The last words he said "na only you remain oo" meant shame and disgrace to me.

We were almost home by the time, he narrated the story to me, I was having some sort of fear in me, I was scared of having issues with Mama Landlady

We arrived at home...

Mr Akpan opened the gate and went in ahead of me, I stayed for a while outside while I went to ease myself

 I entered through the gate,closed it gently and made move to pass through the passage leading to my room

Entering the passage, I saw a feminine figure, standing at my doorpost.....
